Alan’s first play, The Ching Room, was a co-production between Oran Mor and Traverse Theatre and resulted in a Best Actor nomination for Andy Clark at the Critics Awards for Theatre in Scotland (CATS) 2009. The Confidant was co-produced by the National Theatre of Scotland and Oran Mor, adapted from a script by Venzuelan playwright Gilberto Pinto. Turbo Folk, directed by Sacha Kyle and nominated for Best New Play at the CATS 2010, also premiered at Oran Mor. Pinocchio, Alan’s first children’s show, was a direct commission for The Arches in 2011, later followed by Nikki and the Gang for Youth Musical Theatre UK in 2012.
Much of Alan’s best theatrical work has been performed solo and directed by Sacha Kyle. The hugely popular The Moira Monologues premiered at the 2009 Aye Write festival in Glasgow before going on to run at the Citizens Theatre in Glasgow, the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and the Royal Exchange Theatre in Manchester. The Red Hourglass received glowing reviews for its 2012 Edinburgh Fringe run and UK tour. Most recently, Ban This Filth! was selected as a Scotsman Hot Show and was shortlisted for an Amnesty International Freedom of Expression Award 2013. It will be touring Scotland in early 2014.
Alan is currently writing a new monologue for Perth Theatre, to open in Spring 2014. In addition, Alan and Sacha are currently developing a show about Scottish independence, to open at the Edinburgh Fringe 2014, and a play about a certain iconic British footballer…
