PLAYS AND PERFORMANCES

Sometimes I like standing up on a stage and showing off. Sometimes I give other people words so they can do it too.

Alan Bissett has talent to burn. Not only does he write novels which have people uttering words like ‘virtuoso’ and ‘genius’, he clearly put as much stock in performing his words as he does in getting them down in the first place.”
– Brian Donaldon, The Scotsman

THE MOIRA MONOLOGUES

(or ‘TIMES WHEN I BITE’) clip

The Glen Club (Falkirk) and Mitchell Library Theatre (Glasgow)
March 2009
Written and performed by: Alan Bissett
Director: Sacha Kyle

Outstanding. One of the undoubted highlights of the Aye Write festival. Bissett’s creation was so well-drawn and acted that you had to remind yourself it wasn’t actually Moira on stage. He completely took the theatre over, the audience laughing and crying with Moira all the way.”
Kier Hardie, The Skinny

THE CHING ROOM

Oran Mor (Glasgow)
Traverse Theatre (Edinburgh)
March 2009
Written by: Alan Bissett
Performed by: Andy Clarke, Colin McCredie
Director: Cheryl Martin

Has subtle depth as a meditation on drug culture…
The character of Darren is a demon for our times
.” ****
Joyce Macmillan, The Scotsman

Exudes the same sort of self-assurance as Gregory Burke’s debut,
Gagarin Way…You can see real talent at work here
.” ****
Alan Chadwick, Metro

As tight as a short drama set in a toilet cubicle should be…
A curiously compelling little play
.”
Mark Brown, The Herald

For any theatre companies out there, I also have a completed playscript of my novel, The Incredible Adam Spark, which I have adapted myself. Contact me if you would like to read this.

DISCOMBOBULATE
"A uniformly excellent line-up…
And all of this somehow came in at less than a fiver
(four stars)" The Scotsman

Discombobulate is a monthly performance literature evening at the Arches in Glasgow, run by the poet/novelist Magi Gibson and comedian/novelist Ian Macpherson. Regular performers include myself, Iain Heggie, Billy Letford, Kirstin Innes, Anneliese Mackintosh and the band Maple Leaves.

It’s a pretty good vibe. Experimental, but features only engaging performers and doesn’t take itself too seriously.

Discombobulate has run successfully at the CCA for a year and in May 2009 relocated to the Arches. Previous performers have included Aidan Moffat, Liz Lochhead, AL Kennedy, Arnold Brown and Bruce Morton.

Events scheduled for June and July. See Alan's WordPress blog updates for future line-ups.
